Can anyone explain the brightness ratings on the Photon web site? The white light has a different unit of measurement from the others.

According to the Photon web site
white and turquoise lights take CR2016 batteries
and the red light takes CR2032 batteries.
The reason I was interested in the turquoise instead of the red was so I could have a night vision light that takes the same batteries as the white light.
But you seem to use either battery in the turquoise. Does either battery work in the red too?

I assume you mean the "6500K" and the various "nm" measures. Those aren't a measure of brightness. The 6500K is a color temperature. The higher the number, the slightly bluer tint or "cooler" the light appears. 6500K would be considered "cool". In general, all 5mm white LED's are cool, though, so not a terribly informative number.

The "nm" numbers are the wavelengths of the individual colored units in nanometers. White is a mixture of colors so you can't list a single wavelength number for it. It is a more accurate description of the color. If a customer wants to know if the red model is a deep red or more of a red-orange, they can immediately tell from the wavelength.

Thanks, they appear to be pretty useless data then. Anyone know how bright the different lights are?

Well, that's the beauty of the Freedom model--the output is adjustable. Since you're interested in preserving night vision, the question about brightness isn't really that important. All of the different models are bright enough to affect your night vision to some extent unless you turn down the output.

So, unless I'm misunderstanding your intentions, sounds like you can just get a turquoise (since you don't seem to want a red one) and dim it down to whatever level you think is appropriate to preserve your night vision. The turquoise and the white model will both run on 2 x 2016 cells.

Just a warning from my experience, the turquiose really needs (2) CR2016's to operate effectively. You can use (1)CR2032 but it will be very, very dim. From what I've read, the Green might work better on (1)CR2032 due to its efficiency.

The only lights that CANNOT use (2)CR2016's are:

RED
YELLOW
ORANGE

All the other colors can run on either (2)CR2016's (6V) or (1)CR2032 (3V).

Red would be best for night vision and though it makes red things invisible; there aren't that many red things one needs to see in the woods.
But it's always a good idea to have the same batteries in everything. Then you can empty one torch to supply another.
I never did get a reply to my question 'does the turquoise make too many things invisible in the woods?'. Do you know?

We use red lights all the time for night time chart work. Our charts are printed in a magenta color which is still visible under red light. Not sure how much this pertains to "land maps" though...

No, it doesn't make anything "invisible" in the woods. It does make black, dark blue, dark green, etc. look the same, so color differentiation is very poor. You'll be able to see things, just not tell what color they are. Hope that helps.
