Interesting write up on a water filtering process developed by some guys at Stanford. What do you guys think?

Quote:

Instead, those bacteria pass through several layers of cotton, where an electrical field zaps them with 20 volts of electricity for several seconds. It's a technique that researchers have dubbed conductive "nano-coated" cotton. Twenty volts is barely enough to make a human tingle, but tests found that more than 98 percent of Escherichia coli bacteria were killed instantly.

........................

Cui and the team created this nanofilter by dipping plain cotton cloth in a high-tech broth full of silver nanowires and carbon nanotubes. They used cotton because you can find it anywhere in the world, and they used a "negligible" amount of silver, all in an effort to keep costs low.

Good catch LED, but I like this one a lot better off your same web site. This one will not only kill viruses but desalinize sea water and uses a 60 watt cell.

http://news.discovery.com/tech/computer-chips-water-purifier.html

During a recent test, the new purifier removed 99 percent of contaminants from a test mixture of North Atlantic seawater, blood, proteins and small plastic particles. Because contaminants are pushed away from the membrane, instead of being drawn through the membrane, the device will not clog.

If its just running water threw electric mesh of cotton and silver i wonder if you could do the same with something like a fine mesh of copper?

Ah, but it's not yet drinkable.

From an article <http://www.nanowerk.com/spotlight/spotid=15433.php>: "Han (the name of one of the researchers) points out that the present mechanism cannot be applied to the removal of neutral organic compounds. So, to obtain truly drinkable water, conventional methods for removing neutral compounds, such as charcoal absorption, should be used in combination with this method."

That's always the problem in a survival situation: You can get the biologicals out by heating, but the organics remain intact -- and possibly deadly.

Agreed, thats one amazing chip.

Never knew that, very interesting.

The Fox River X-Static Liner socks use the same concept of silver threads for hiking to help reduce foot odor. Except they are made of nylon, which is better for hiking socks.
