And if he hadn't been invalided out, he would have been "The very model of a modern Major General. grin"

Good for him! I understand he actually does quite alot for charities too...its good to see people giving back like this. Although I think his antics on his shows are deplorable, it doesnt take away from the fact the he is skilled, and has a large following. This is good news for him, and I wish him the best of luck!

Well there are worse people that could have been picked for the job. Personally I would have chosen Ray Mears but I doubt he would have the "star appeal" that Bear brings to the table in terms of recruiting and fund raising.

What he lacks in good sense will be made up for by the attention it brings to the organization which will translate into donations, volunteering, etc.

Who knows, maybe one of the scouts will actually teach him something about wilderness safety.

Heaven knows he could sure use the lesson.

The ultimate goal of any teacher is to learn from a student's further study.
I taught a kid to swim who was terrified of the water.
I am a lousy swimmer but know how to survive in the stuff.
Kids a lifeguard with the state beaches now.
This is a chance for Bear to counterbalance the dumb things.
We should all have such opportunities.

I'm inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt. Despite some of the loony stunts he's pulled on TV, there's no reason why he can't "improve the quality of the day," which is the benchmark I set for myself.

Interesting that the focus is not on getting more kids into Scouts (big waiting list). It's getting more adult volunteers. Hmm.

Doug, I think they go hand in hand. Without the volunteers, they cannot take all the scouts in. Not enough leaders. So, I can see where the benefits of getting more adult leaders to volunteer lies.
As for his on screen antics-again, I do not agree with what he "taught" (which wasnt really anything, to speak of), but, he does entertain. I watch the show, with a grain of salt, but I also like to think I am smarter than that. As is he...but he does it for entertainment value as well. Lets face it; the american audience likes watching things that are inherently dangerous-regardless whether the situation is staged or not. I, personally, do not think Bear is completely one-sided; I think that he is using his star status for good, and is getting kids outside, AWAY from TVs, and PCs. He has accomplished a lot, more than likely most of us have...not to say we arent an experienced bunch, but he has had the opportuinity to travel on the copany's dime. Most of us would chomp at the bit for that as well. But, at the end of the day, he is helping kids out, in scouting, and from what I understand, through funding other outdoor programs, as well as charity work. You cant really fault a guy for that, even if it is a tax write off.
