Doug, I think they go hand in hand. Without the volunteers, they cannot take all the scouts in. Not enough leaders. So, I can see where the benefits of getting more adult leaders to volunteer lies.
As for his on screen antics-again, I do not agree with what he "taught" (which wasnt really anything, to speak of), but, he does entertain. I watch the show, with a grain of salt, but I also like to think I am smarter than that. As is he...but he does it for entertainment value as well. Lets face it; the american audience likes watching things that are inherently dangerous-regardless whether the situation is staged or not. I, personally, do not think Bear is completely one-sided; I think that he is using his star status for good, and is getting kids outside, AWAY from TVs, and PCs. He has accomplished a lot, more than likely most of us have...not to say we arent an experienced bunch, but he has had the opportuinity to travel on the copany's dime. Most of us would chomp at the bit for that as well. But, at the end of the day, he is helping kids out, in scouting, and from what I understand, through funding other outdoor programs, as well as charity work. You cant really fault a guy for that, even if it is a tax write off.
