I wonder if the flint is the same. Does the Spark-Lite give off a hotter spark? That matters a lot.

I have used dead Bics for this kind of thing. It requires really fine tinder (thistle down or cattail down).

The Flint on a regular size bic is the exact size as the spark-lite and if it wasnt for my Spark-lite being broken I would replace the flint but it is the body that broke! but I used to regularly change the flint by the small allen screw in the bottom (yes it is on the plastic SLs too!)

It's not about size, it's about composition. That determines how hot the spark is. Bics are designed to ignite butane gas, which has a pretty low ignition temperature. I don't know about SparkLites, which is why I'm asking.

That's pretty cool.

But, I have one tiny question: If I'm going to carry something the same size and weight as a Bic why wouldn't I just carry a Bic. You know, one with butane. This is also why I'm somewhat less than sanguine about carrying a Spark-lite. A mini-Bic is IMO more reliable and more dependable as a fire starter.

IMHO.
The sparks out of this one may be not very good because the spark wheel and the flint may be worn and/or dirty/oily. So, I'd clean the wheel and reverse the flint to expose the fresh side prior to re-installation.

The spark-lite is definitely lighter and smaller than mini-Bic. This conversion on the other side looks friendlier to a bigger hand and also have a nice storage compartment (not necessarily for a tinder). I can see its benefits for some situations.

By the way, there are a couple of new and exciting articles on that site.

You can go really compact by cutting down the lighter thus making Ranger Ricks "Four-Finger-Fire-Starters"

It is a useful bit of knowledge to have if you find yourself out there in need. You can find these types of lighters all over the world and all over the place: garbage, side of the road, etc. While I wouldn't use it for a primary fire starting method, it is good to know.

I'm a regular over there, since I slowed down here last year. I tried this conversion and after clearing the guts of the lighter away, it lights cotton, lint, char cloth, toilet paper, paper towels very easy. I cut mind down so its only 1/4 size of a mini bic. I never bought a spark lite, and now I never will.
