Stuff we don’t mention here:

I sooooo appreciate the technology updates. However I think this is a topic that would be fun to approach.

Name the few things that you hold dear to you’re heart and will never give up regardless of modern technology.

Me: My Old Timer Knife SCHRADE USA 160. ((Fixed Blade) over 14 oz) If you care to let me know what the 160 means thanks in advance. I won’t let it go EVER! I have had it for 15 + years and it still holds a great edge. My Steel toe Red Wing boots. Also my little bottle of Iodine tabs.

Please don’t be shy. What can’t you do without? Regardless of modern perception? (Weight is of no consequence.)

Thanks

Cameron….Chicago Formerly of Idaho

You know, this kind of surprised me, but I can't think of anything that hasn't evolved for the better:

Boy Scout Pocketknife ==> Leatherman Charge Ti
Buck Special ==> Becker BK10 & Benchmade Rant
Aluminum Canteen ==> Nalgene Widemouth Bottle
Zippo ==> Bic & Spark-Lite
Aluminum Canoe ==> Fiberglass & Composite Canoe
Film Camera ==> Digtal Camera
Incandescent Flashlights ==> LED Flashlights
Regular Batteries ==> Alkaline Batteries
Canvas Backpack ==> Cordura Backpack
Canvas Tent ==> Nylon/Polyester Tent
Canvas Tarps ==> Nylon Tarps
Down Sleeping Bag ==> Polyfill Sleeping Bag
Open Cell Foam Pad ==> Thermarest Pad
Cotten Clothing ==> Synthetic Clothing
Metal Mess Kit ==> Lexan Mess Kit
Metal Utensils ==> Lexan Utensils
Regular Paper ==> Write In The Rain Paper
Windup Watches ==> Digital Electronic Watches

Even dental floss has improved a lot

A few things that haven't changed much:
Silva-type compasses
Binoculars
Toothpaste
Pencils
Remington 870 Shotgun
Water

Well to add to the reality, humor and just make a reply...
-toothpaste-we did add whitening for what its worth
-silnet tarps are a nice lightweight way to go now
-sometimes a film camera will still be clicking when a digital battery is long gone
-nimh batteries are as about long lasting as some alkalines
-pencils-we did move up to the mechinical lead pencils
-water-now its preflavored...hahaha

Those Schrade Old Timer carbon steel knives are classics. 160 is just the model number AFAIK. I have the 165 OT Woodsman which is the slightly bigger brother of your 160. Like you, I wouldn't trade mine for anything.

Interesting question, but I think I would have to say the old coffee pot...there is nothing like the smell of coffee on a cold November morning...roll over, light the stove and wait for the smell to wake you back up. Kind of messy to clean up, grounds everywhere, but the pleasure it provides is worth the trouble.

I inherited an Old Timer 156 OT. It sat in a drawer for years until a few months back. I put an edge on it and man does it feel great in the hand ! It is definately a keeper. Also have an older Marbles Ideal and something called an Edge Brand #471 - Solingen Germany. Nice knives. Still need a bit of practice to get great edges on them. I'll try to get photos posted sometime soon. I don't know much about them so any info would be really appreciated.

Bedrolls. What they call now 'outfitter' bedrolls. Basically a tarp with a blanket bed in it.

Sure, they are heavy, but if you have a vehicle or a horse, they are great.

I always laugh at western movies, looking at the skinny little roll they have on the back of the saddle. I've been there, done that, and it ain't that skinny.
