I didn;t read your blog yet Martin...sorry.

A few months back, there was some buzz about a "coffee war" brewing between Starbucks and McDonalds. Now, when I first heard it, I thought "They're not even in the same league! McDonalds makes COFFEE. Starbucks makes high-dollar...uhm....something".

Sure enough, they did an on-the-street survey. Who came out way on top? McDonalds. They make probably the best coffee that you can buy (convenience store wise) in my opinion. The only thing that'll ruin the McDonald's cup of coffee is if they breakaway and start trying to compete with Starbucks with all their brands.

I drive 70 miles one-way to work too. Problem is, putitng coffee in a "thermos" style cup somehow imparts a taste I don;t like. I take a ceramic mug....the same one I drank the other two cups out of *before* leaving the house.

Curious, what is WaWa. Is that a real store name or nickname?

I spent almost every other week in Newport (Jersey City) between August and January and about 1 week a month before that between June and August but don't remember anything with that name or that could be shortened to that -- but then life was a two block walk up Washington Ave. at 8:00 am and back down to the hotel at 9:00 pm.

Maybe it is something I should recognize but I have been up all night and my mind is not quite as sharp as it should be at this point.

Wawa?
When people hear "Wawa" for the first time, many don't know what to think. They are not really sure if it's a play on words or an improper pronunciation of a thirst quencher, but there's no doubt that many find it funny. However, don't let our name fool you: we take what we do very seriously.

Over 100 years ago, our original dairy farm was built on land located in a rural section of Pennsylvania called Wawa, which was named from a local Native American tribe in honor of their favored game - the Canada Goose. Today, the name Wawa has come to symbolize the very best attributes of our company.

Just like a majestic flock of Canada Geese flying synchronously in "V" formation, we employ the principles of teamwork, group consensus and encouragement in our company. We think it's the only way to fly. And because of this philosophy, we've been able to accomplish feats that others would consider impossible. That's why, in our market area, our customers tell us that we define what a convenience store should be.

You are dead on ! I've seen this pandemonium before and have elected to avoid it altogether rather than wade into the fracus. And the corrective action suggested is clearly a do-able way of solving the problem.
Of course, getting any store to do that mean they gotta give a crap. I've tried similar things in other arenas of concern and found that few people that possess the logic required to see this problem and design a solution actually run a business. Their focus seems to always be in a hundred other places. But with enough care and nurturing it could be accomplished ... though I'd bet once "the help" cleaned it up they'd put it back the way it had been for years unless there was some cut-outs in the counter or marks indicating where everything was suppose to go. After all, it is hard to get good help.
Sure you could make your own coffee at home.... and I do sometimes. But this problem exists everywhere I've ever been to one degree or another. And I always figured these people just scheduled 20 minutes in the daily routine to execute a task that should only take3 if you have to wait in line to pay !
Oh ...and love the visual aids too !

Haven't you heard? McDonalds coffee may be hot! You could scald yourself if you spill it in your lap. Starbucks sounds safer. laugh

I'm old enough and have been in this area long enough to remember when Wawa was just a dairy down the road from the Franklin MInt.
