Welcome Stranger,

Depends a lot on where you live. Carrying a fixed blade in the wilds of Los Angeles will get you lots of stares, but won't in Alaska. I carried a fixed blade a lot last summer while driving all over Canada and Alaska, and no one even gave it/me a second glance (unless they wanted to fondle my Randall). But most of the time my EDC is a Leatherman Supertool...

For me, it depends on which "every day" I'm in... every day during the week unfortunately means I'm in a suit most of the time, and although the jacket might hide even a large fixed blade in a sheath, it's just not going to be acceptable. In that case, I only have "on me" a very small SAK and a Leatherman Squirt on a keychain with a flashlight, whistle, compass, and fero/magnesium combination rod.

Usually nearby, in my desk, and in my car, well, I have an assortment of very capable "tools" at my disposal.

On the weekend, I'll have a decent locking folder in my pocket, and a Leatherman Wave on my belt usually.

On a camping weekend, I'll have that, plus a fixed blade in a sheath on the belt.

As everyone is saying, it all depends. I work every day in an urban area, so I carry a folder in my pocket that's big enough for most chores, but not so bulky that it attracts comment (Spyderco Salt II). On weekends it's usually a little bit bigger, stouter folder (Camillus Heat). For camping and hiking, I usually prefer a small-to-medium fixed blade, like the Becker Necker (now out of production).

Most places even if it is leagel the cops may stop you because if it fairly frequently, I carry a Kershaw clip knife for edc but let me get to the woods and I have my Anza on my hip. OBG can I fondle your Randell (as long as it's a knife) I promise to give it back in a few years.

The Randall in question is a number 8 Bird and Trout, but with you on the road most of the year, and us on the road all of the time, I just don't think I would be able to get it to you. But nice try...

Leatherman Wave and Squirt for EDC. At school just the Squirt.

I also keep a 'Pocket survival tool' card in my wallet

The only fixed-blade knife I have, is just a Mora-knife in my hiking-kit
