Interesting story, but I'm confused:

Quote:
A passing civilian jet received a distress call after the crash, and a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration satellite began picking up transmissions from the plane's emergency locator beacon at about 7 p.m. Monday, Evinger said.

But, he said, it was tough to pinpoint the location, and authorities initially believed the two were in Klamath County, triggering the search headed by the Klamath County sheriff's search and rescue team.

The initial satellite transmissions were hundreds of miles apart, but after gradually consolidating a position, Evinger said he called for a National Guard OH-58 Kiowa helicopter equipped with an infrared sensor to search in the dark.

I am a member of an S&R team in New Mexico and our team is planning to do ELT training later this year. I wonder why, in the plane crash above, they were not better able to pinpoint the crash using the signal from the plane's ELT, and had to instead rely on a helicoper with infrared? Any theories?

There are a number of possibilities. Here's a link to the
Wikipedia article how ELT's work.

Good luck with your training!

In this case, the air assest was requested very early (within 45 mins of the report) because it was a confirmed event with survivors. The area is fairly remote and ground SAR takes some spin-up time.

The NG sent a OH-58 with FLIR. The extraction was done by a UH-60.
