Quote:
There are few fears more primal than being cast away on a deserted island in the middle of who-knows-where. Maybe it's a throwback to our eviction from the Garden of Eden, or the nagging realization that Earth itself is just such an island in the endless ocean of space. Whatever the reason, it has been and remains a mainstay of the collective imagination.

The Scenario:
You are on a small sailboat in the South Pacific when a freak wave of Biblical proportions swallows your craft. You awake to find yourself on the rocky, sandy beach of--what else?--a tiny deserted tropical island. As the fierce equatorial sun beats down on you, you realize that the boat is gone, but a large section of the white, waterproof nylon sail has washed up on thet beach.

Relieved that you are alive and have sustained no major injuries, you quickly scout out the island. There is a cave for shelter, an abundance of vines and vegetation, but no trees to speak of. You see enough sea birds and marine life to provide a subsistence diet, but there is no source of fresh water! And the rainy season is still months away.

The Challenge:
Come up with a reliable way to produce potable water until you are rescued--or the meaning of life is revealed to you, and being rescued no longer matters.

Your items:
You have only the nylon sailcloth and what you were wearing when you washed ashore: a dark, waterproof windbreaker; a T-shirt; and shorts, in which you find your Swiss Army knife (or Leatherman tool) and a pack of waterproof matches. If it provides additional motivation, feel free to be cast away with the fantasy celebrity of your choice--but this person is still counting on you to provide drinkable water. And if you're looking for extra points here, forget the pack of matches.

Good luck, and rest assured that we're all out there looking for you.

Your only option is to use the sail to make a solar still. If you dig a shallow pit at the waters edge, it will fill with sea water. Put a pole in the middle of the pit. Tent material over the pit. Ensure that you fold the bottom edge inwards to make a gutter.
In theory the sun will evaporate the sea water. Which will separate the salt in it from the water. The evaporated water will condense on the inside of the sail and run down in to the gutter. Collect and consume.

Note: The amounts of water will be quite small. You will need several of them. You will also need to remove them before the tide comes in. Shelter in the cave during the heat of the day. Fish for food using improvised hooks and line, Attempt to construct and use a fishing spear. Do not use your knife as a spear point! Fish during the evening and at dawn. Those are the most active times on most reefs. Fish contain fresh water in their eyeballs and in their swim bladder (I think).

Why not make an actual still? use the sail, hollowed vines and improvised collection devices to turn the water into steam and then cool it down to condense it and collect it?

Either follow the birds to see where they drink water or dig up the ground around the vegetation, either way you will find water. Birds and plants need water to survive, they must be getting it somehow.

I would put the sail in the cave and collect the condensation that happens there for drinking water.

The still won't work for two reasons:
1) The fire will melt the sail.
2) You don't have anything like enough burnable materials for long term use.

Also you need any wood etc for fish and bird traps.

That's a good idea. Add that one in. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Inventory:
Large piece of white sailcloth, nylon, waterproof*
Dark windbreaker, waterproof
Shirt
Shorts
Leatherman
Waterproof Matches

*By large, I think at least tarp size

Resources:
A cave
vines and vegitation, no trees
sea birds
marine life

A few thoughts...
The sailcloth is white, and reflects heat. The windbreaker is dark and absorbs it.

If you have to sew something for your project, you can probably make a bone needle from a dead bird. For cordage, you can make some from the vines and vegitation, or the sailcloth may have some heavy thread seams you can cannabilize.

The temperature inside cave can be significantly cooler than the ambient outside temperature. Perhaps this can be used to our advantage. It may even be low enough to condense the humid air and create dew you can soak up.

For small amounts of water, you can...
-Find out where birds hang out. There may be water in rock cracks and so forth.
-Collect dew in the morning with your tshirt
-Get some water from fish
-Probably get water from vines

For more significant amounts of water, the two obvious sources are the humid air, and the ocean though.
