It only takes about a half a dozen drops of purex to puify a gallon of water. It may not taste so good but it is safe. I've drank ou tof questionable places and am 70 and still kicking.

1st post here.
When I was young, all the old folks without "city water" had well buckets on a windless over their wells. The buckets were galvanized steel, about 6 inches in diameter and about 3 feet long. When Y2K came along, I removed my inoperative "jet pump" on my well and replaced it with a well bucket and 100 feet of good rope. In an emergency, I can now hoist my water by hand, about 3 gallons at a time, the 50 feet or so from the water level to the surface. I can then purify it and drink it. Or just use it for flushing my toilet. I bought my well bucket from a Mennonite general store.
Hope this helps.

Issue is now that my well is a closed cap with a 4 inch down pipe that has the current line pvced in the center of the pipe.
No hand drawing.
On another thought level, one of the cooler water supply "lines" I have ever seen was in Pleasanton California, where they had a "Water Temple" tied into the Hetch Hetchy water system. You could pull down a little lane, and walk up to a gazebo like structure and peer down into a 25 foot deep well where much of the water feeding the Bay Area was passing through in a flow of water maybe 3 feet deep. The beautiful clear snow runoff water was just rushing by as you looked down on it. I imagine the risk managers have secured this by now, but it was a very neat place to take a date for a quick diversion.
Any one else know what I am refering too?

I've practically lived in Pleasanton for more than a year on business, and I don't recall this ever being brought up. Do you recall where it was located physically? I'd love to see if it's still open to public viewing.

I don't own a generator (yet) and have actually been talked out of one by my electrican who points out since we have underground wiring it may be overkill... " we have not lost power in this area for more than 2 hours in his lifetime" He is looking at it from a past performance point of view and not a preparedness view obviously.

I don't yet own a generator, but it's definitely on my list. Still, from this comment, I can't fathom taking this advice. When I worked in Eden Prairie, MN. there were day+ long power outages at work due to construction guys cutting the line. And many times they scheduled digs on Thurs. or Friday and were down all weekend and residential customers were also affected. This happened on a nearly weekly basis for months. I have also experienced the results of many back hoes going through water, power, and even a gas line once (complete evac of the area).

Underground power can and has been broken. From anecdotal evidence it's also difficult to repair, especially in bad weather. And unless it's buried from generation plant to your house there's still a large chance that weather/above ground accidents could take out the juice somewhere up the line, so when 70k people are out, you probably will be too.

The recent ice storms in the midwest and the mass of ice coating the local trees have me pricing generators now....

Don't let anyone talk you out of a prudent preparedness item because it hasn't happened in their lifetime. I'd say that goes for just about any emergency/survival item.

Just off Niles Canyon Rd, look south for a big gazebo like structure... ask a local!

Ah, that's to the south, and I never spent much time in that direction other than going downtown. Next time I go, I'll keep going south on Main.

I'll be d**mned!

It's been half a century since I saw that as a kid. My father drove us up there from SoCal to visit a friend, and the friend took us to see that. My father picked me up and set me on the edge, scaring me absolutely to death.

I've wondered about it for many, many years! Thanks!

Sue

I have not been there post 9-11, so I am not sure what the accessability is anymore.
I have never seen anything else like it.
