I know about having to use bear containers for food stores while in the wilderness, but mouse proof containers.

This is a first for me.

I usually have some jerky double ziplocked bagged in my hiking vest, I eithet left it in my car or my garage for a couple days, and then discovered that the little rodents got in a velcro pocket chewed through the zip lock bags and dined on my jerky......what a treat for them. So now I suppose I have to research and order rodent proof food containers, what next!

Yes, they'll do that. They will also chew through a tent to get the food inside. They can chew through cardboard, rigid plastic, etc. About the only thing they can't get into is metal.

And they will go after anything that smells of food, including papier mache art projects.

It's time to put some rat poison in with some jerky & put it in the place. Write "POISON - DO NOT EAT" on it. I don't think that rodents can read.

Rubbermaid containers resist mice and rat attacks pretty well, and they are cheap! I used to raise rats and mice by the hundreds in these containers and never once did I have an escape due to chewing through the container. I have no idea why they don't chew through them, but they really don't. In fact, they are the most used breeding containers that I am aware of due to that very fact. They're also stackable, and as I said before, really really cheap. Give it a try and see how it works for you.

Go to a store that sells bow hunting supplies. Get a scent based on a predator's excretions. First make sure you can stand the smell, then put just a tiny bit of it on your pack or near where it is stored. The mice will think that a fox or something is nearby and not mess with your gear.

I had mice destroying books being stored in the attic, and this settled them down PDQ when I just put a very small amount on the outside of the boxes (books were poly bagged), and a bit more on rags at each mouse hole I found. More effective than a cat, and considering my furry assassins' love of the hunt, that's saying a lot.

I did raise them for snakes but oddly enough I have never actually owned a boa for more than a couple of hours (I've been in the herp trade for about 15 years now). I've owned pretty much everything else though. Those rubbermaid containers are lifesavers for me. They house my spider collection at the moment, and they also serve well for soup mixes, condiments, and other assorted flat packaged items. The only downsides they have are bulky size and not watertight. I found out when I started keeping venomous, a little tape goes a long way to ensuring what you put in them stays in them. They are also a breeze to clean since not very much will stick to them.

This container is very lightweight compared to your regular bear canisters. If you are planning on using it to guard your food against little critters, it has a drawstring to completely close it shut. I own an Ursacks and it has lightened my load on my last trip to Mt. Whitney by a good 4-6 pounds, since I didn't have to carry the bulky plastic bear canister
