Quick question;

Has anyone tried out or had experience with the maglite led(not the 2aa or 3aa) but the 2d or higher versions. I like the mini mag leds. but im wondering about the regular version to replace my old regular maglite.

Thanks

I don't have one of my own, but almost bought one after I saw a friends in action. As far as throw, it's not any less powerful than a standard. I've got a 4D standard Maglite, and the one I saw was the same thing only in LED. It was pretty impressive. However, DO NOT buy the standard and then one of those Nite-Ize conversion kits. They're total crap. I didn't buy it myself, but someone gave it to me for my birthday. Wish I hadn't opened it so I could have returned it. They're ok for the extended run time, but for everything else, they're crap. plain and simple. I say stick with standards.

I have done MagLED upgrades with most of my 2C lights and all of my 3D lights. I am very pleased by the output and longevity of the lights. Superb product.

The Nite-Ize upgrade for large MagLites has very low output with super long runtime. It has a niche as a survial type light. I have put these in a couple of the 4 cell dorcy lanterns for use as long running emergency lights.

The Nite-Ize upgrade for 2AA maglites is a decent product. I like the smooth flood beam and long runtime. Plus it is much more reliable than the stock incandescent bulbs that pop when you drop your light. This upgrade works good for map reading and other inside vehicle needs. I add a bit of clear contact paper/film (contact brand, available at wally world) to the lens as a diffuser. This smooths out the LED artifacts and increases the flood. Nice upgrade in my opinion.

My other 2C maglights have been modded with three CR123 batteris and 6 cell MagLite Xenon bulbs. Very sweet sleeper lights. It's a small package that will out do a stock 6 Cell maglite. If you like playing with or modding flashlights come join all the fun at:

Beware, flashlights can be every bit as addicting as preparedness kits.

As others have noted, the Mag LED are great, just don't but the NiteIze, they were ok for their time but LEd technology has progresed to where there are much better LED's out there now.
And don't overpay by shopping at walmart, but them somewhere else.

The best thing to do with 2AA MiniMaglights is throw them in the garbage & by a L2T Fenix. Before you say "But the Fenix is expensive!" , I probably spent that much money in replacement bulbs over the years. Buy yourself a Fenix; you deserve it.

After buying the Night Ize LED upgrade and IQ switch my Mini-Maglites have found new life. For $15 I was able to upgrade each of my Mini's, I have started using these lights in a number of my kits. I still EDC my Surefire L1, but in a couple survival kits and is my first choice for a light on EMS calls.

When Fenix starts making durable lights, I'll buy one again... Bought two, both broke within 4 months. I have had a bunch of Mag products with not a single failure. We will see how the night-ize products hold up, but 5 months with the LED and IQ upgrades with no problems yet.

i too bought the niteize upgrade for the 2AA minimag. it sure was a step up.

then i read about - and purchased - the luxeon ministar2 led for another 2AA minimag. wow. in a side-by-side, in-the-closet comparison the ministar 2 far and away outshines the niteize.

batteryjunction.com has the ministar2 for under $20.00 - for those of us who love the minimags. they also have the niteize led/tail switch combo on sale for $6.95.
