I stopped my local Staples today, and they had these tins for putting gift cards in if you give them as gifts. They had one that was maybe a little more than 3" square, and about as thick as an Altoids tin, that had a single piece bottom. They had a second that was a little longer, that had a press fitted bottom. Either was about two bucks.

I'm thinking I might have to pick one of the square ones up.

I saw something like that for gift cards at Home Depot last week. These were flatter, maybe 1/3" tall. Or 1/2"?

They wouldn't hold a lot, but they might be suitable for certain things.

OK, I broke down and bought a couple of these (Sprawlmart has them for something silly like 88 cents, I couldn't resist).

Dimensions are 3.5" on a side, about 5/8" tall. Poking that into the calculator, these are just under 90% larger than an Altoids tin. Two part, so you don't have to worry about hinge clearance.

I've experimentally repacked my PSK main and auxilliary tins into it, loosing only the foot or so of duct tape from the PSK (but there is still about 8' in there), a star burst, two screw eyes, a safety pin, and deleting the redundant water bag and repacked PA tabs from the PSK-aux tin. And there is still a little room.

I'm thinking about spray painting the entire thing a day-glo color with a white stripe for finding it at night. This tin feels RIGHT to me, so next time in retail's version of the Inferno, I might have to clean them out of thier supply. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I found something similar at Michaels the other day. These are rectangular, 5 x 3 1/8 and about 5/8 thick. Top comes off, the bottom is recessed in a little bit, wasting some interior space, but creating a semi-protected area on the bottom where I put the foil from my Ritter pocket kit. Enough room for all of the stuff from the Ritter and quite a bit more. Mine has a bright red lid and satin finished metal bottom. Cost a whopping $1!!!
