Hey everybody. so in the near future im planning on getting a couple new knives. the sog pentagon, kdi law enforcment blade. for self defense and coolness. <img src="/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />
but im deciding between the sog seal knife 2000 or the Gerber LMF II ASEK Survival Knife
both look good. ive seen them both handled the sog and thought it was a little heavy(but then again i thought my kabar was heavy but feels like nothing now with experience) and the sog seal 2000 felt very sturdy. i know the gerber has a sharpener and can be turned into a spear or used as a hammer if needed.
so my question is which would you pick the gerber or sog? have you read any reviews or heard any good or bad things about either knife?any help or anything would be very useful. thanks and God Bless.

Doug briefly reviewed LMF ASEK. (Scroll down to Gerber section).
Never heard anything bad said about SOG Seal series.

I've got a SealPup and I'm quite pleased with it. I've never seen a bad review on it either.

Suggestion: don't buy a knife for "coolness". (No one has ever defined coolness to my satisfaction.)
The idea of using a knife for civilion self-defense is pretty much a fantasy, unless you have a good deal of training and practice. Rather than just being robbed, flashing a blade could get you killed.
A handgun is one thing, a knife is something entirely differant.

If those are your only two choices I would take take the Gerber because it was designed for survival. Many SOGs have very pointy tips that are waiting to snap.
As far as using your knife as a spear; never do this, instead sharpen the stick into a spear.

I would suggest considering an Ontario Rat series knife. These are very stury and sharp blades with a simple utilitarian design. I have a RAT 7 and it rocks. Beckers are good too but getting hard to find.
Also look at Doug's fixed blade; can't go wrong with Benchmade IMO.

I had the Sog Seal 2000 knife. It's large, mean, and very capable knife! However, for my needs, it was too long and too heavy. Also, the finger groves were a bit shallow to my taste.

I'd look into the Sog Seal Pup Elite if I were you.

Definitely agree here -- forget the coolness factor -- flashing a knife in today's society will likely get you trouble instead of admiration.

If you are lucky you just get arrested, if you are really unlucky someone explains about bringing a knife to a gunfight...

I was always taught if you pull a knife and don’t know how to use it someone will take it away from you and use it on YOU…..
