While looking for something else I stumbled onto the Sog Jungle Primitive, a rather large fixed blade with a semi-Bowie shape to it. SOG claimes that it can be a small machete, saw (one version has saw teeth), a hammer (I am guessing the butt of the grip, but can not tell for sure). 9.5" blade, no mention of thickness, 420 stainless (the saw toothed version is black, the othe is satin finished). MSRP is $60, but many on-line venders offer them in the $35 range.

I kindasorta like big blades, has anyone actually seen one of these puppies???

Well, you missed out on the Soviet Spetsnatz closeout, mercifully no longer imported by the vendor. The SOG's 'hammer' is an extended tang inspired by Fallkniven and more properly used to drive the blade into small trees using the scandinavian method. It's thick, @ 5/32 and carries about as well as an old model 28 Highway Patrolman. I saw one at a recent gunshow. I wanted to try the sawback on a barrel of surplus prop guns, but the ghilly suit clad vendor is still mad over my reply to his query about my support for swiftboat veterans for truth. Lifeboat Surfmen for Nader is still soliciting members. for $35 buy the thing and get it out of your system.

I'd buy it for $35.

Normally I'd say go with the straight edge, but the sawback w/serrated-straight combo looks mighty nice. I normally carry plenty of straight edge on me anyway, so that might not be a bad addition. It looks like it actually has a hammering surface with grooves for better traction on what you hit.

Yup.

The 27 is just the finer finshed version of the 28, both big but tough. I bought my 6" 28 while I was in the Air Farce, carried it 'til the CHP allowed 4", had it rebarreled. After rebluing it several times (Hoyte breakfront holsters are rough on bluing) I had it Armaloyed (GREAT finish). Still have it, altho it, and all but one of my other handguns, is at home in the gunsafe while we are on the road, seeing the world...
