I usually keep the cords that come with the window miniblinds curtains. When people throw them away I cut this cords and wash them and use the for many things. They are thing and very strong.

The local Walmarts sell something called Sportsman's Cord. It is thin nylon cord on a small spool that comes in either camo and orange colors. Look for it in their sporting goods section. I use it for compass & whislte lanyards since it is much lighter weight (easier to stuff in a pocket) and the orange color is nice.

I have some of the Sportsman's Cord from Walmart but the braid is awfully loose so the nylon strands snag a lot.

If you can stand it, you can visit the craft section in Walmart (or other stores) and find lots of different small braided cord there.

The whistles with/pea can also get useless fast in sub-freezing weather. For upland bird hunting over setters and retrievers, I generally get my whistles and lanyards from Lion Country Supply. Here's a link: http://www.lcsupply.com/
I actually use the pealess British buffalo horn model. I know $18 for a whistle seems nuts, but I've tried a bunch of 'em and never found a model I like better for use in the field in any weather.
