Good points Chris. I didn't know this about aluminum or mylar.
I too use foil while out amongst em'. I never believed in littering, but I will be extra careful now. If the woods critters had fillings we wouldn't have to worry about them chewing on foil.
Just a little joke there.
Take care.

Ranger.
The older I get, The better I was.

Biker and Camper's outlets have water bags with drinking tubes. Tubes have a variety of survival uses from distilling water to drinking from solar water gathering. The bags are light weight, sealable, and reusable. Great for Scouting.

As an ex Scout Leader, we allowed our boys to carry the Boy Scout Flint Stick with Striker. We also asked them to carry a supply of link in a zip bag. Lint catches fire easily and builds confidence. We move up from link to tinder as an educational learning tool. (They were required to carry a Fire Starter Card if they carried flint.)

In my wallet I carry a Zippo lighter flint. (Very Small). With a small pen knife I have easy made fire starter tools in an emergency.

I’m questioning your choice of brass for your snare wire. Isn’t brass so soft it can be easily broken, chewed through, etc.? Wouldn’t stainless steel be a better choice?

First of all, I didn't chose it. It is listed in Doug's kit.

Second, I'll take a stab at an answer. I would guess that brass has a decent tensile strength, meaning it'll stretch befor it breaks. It would likely take a large animal to snap a snare. Brass would also resist corrosion.

Regarding stainless steel, I don't recall (with my limited experience) ever seeing a thin wire made of stainless steel. If one exists, I would wonder about its flexibility and weight (I think it would be heavier).

Thanks for the reply.

Willie Vannerson
McHenry, IL

I have a small roll of SS wire, .025 dia., that came from a friend who's a helicopter mechanic. He says it's "safety wire", used to thread through bolt heads to keep them from coming apart.
