If you have the room, try storing your water in a soft-sided cooler. It will also provide some protection against temperature swings as well.

"I tried the red Rubbermaid plastic gas jugs... I always carefully and prolifically mark the outside as 'WATER'."

Someone was stealing gas out of my truck, so I bought a locking gas cap. Then they cut the hose to the tank to get it. So I got an old 3 gal gas can out of the shed, filled it with water, added a bit of gas for scent, then added a pint of sugar & mixed well. I left it standing beside the car on the offside where the gas tank access is (facing away from the house). Two days later, it disappeared.

I'm glad I'm on your good side. :P

The sugar probably didn't do much, but the water... yeah, that's going to small problem for them. I probably would have put in vinegar.

I keep the water in the trunk of my car in a plastic vodka bottle that I think is 1.75 liter. I never had a problem. I took off the label and put a new one that states "Drinking Water". I think that the plastic Clorox gallons are very sturdy, and I have been thinking about replacing the vodka bottle.

Do you think the cops are going to believe it's drinking water in that bottle??

If it's in the trunk, does it matter?

Another option for water is to hit the surplus store and pick up a military water jug. I have one of these and they are indestructible. They are made of thick plastic and have a pour spout as well as a fill lid. Now they may be a bit big for a truck, but for a pick up truck or SUV, they can strapped down.

They come in two colors, tan and black. I would recommend the tan ones. The black ones take in heat and store it up which makes it tough to drink from in the summer, but they make warm water for washing up when you are camping or for washing off feet after a day at the beach!
