W00t! I just won a nice Huntsman Plus SAK off eBay...

Does anyone have experience with this one? It's my first Swiss Army knife. This is the Plus model because it comes with a ballpoint pen and a straight pin.

Being the owner of a Leatherman Fuse already (which has the pliers, and good ones too!), I think the Huntsman will be a good addition to my gear for snowshoeing, hiking and camping.

The bad I guess is that it might be a little on the heavy side, so I will carry this in my daily messenger bag and not on my person. Some people even find it too heavy to bring hiking! Are they exagerating?

People find a SAK to heavy for hiking? Are these the same folks we periodically post news reports about? If your snowshoes dont sink you waistdeep with that big old sword carry it.

The Huntsman one of my top three favorites.

Huntsman: scissors + saw
Climber: just the scissors
Camper: just the saw

Of course all three have additonal blades (knives, awl, corkscrew, can opener, screwdriver, ....), but these are the differences. For me the can opener, awl, tweezers, and scissors were must-haves.

My favorite right now is the glow-in-the-dark StayGlow Yellow Climber from http://www.knifecenter.com . I don't have a great need for a saw blade since I carry a Pocket Chainsaw in my bag.

I have carried the same Spartan ( I think that is the model name now) for the last 25 or so years in my pocket every day. It has the same knife blades, awl, corkscrew,can opener, bottle opener as your Huntsman, but no sissors or saw. While it is the same lenght (3 1/2 inches closed) as your Huntsmans it is not as thick. After 25 years of pocket carry, I am pleased to report that Victorinox products do hold up well in use.

The Huntsman would be a little bulky for my taste to carry in my church pants, but I think you made a great choice for camping or hiking.

Hope you get as much use for the next 25 years from yours as I have from mine for the last 25.

My first significant knife was a Huntsman, you have one of the best possible options, IMHO, for a SAK. It is fairly light, and just the right size, with the tools you will really need.

Avoid the BIG ones, like the SwissChamp. Too big, too heavy, too bulky, it just isn't worth it. A Huntsman and a non-saw equipped Leatherman, like the Fuse or Kick, or a Climber (or Huntsman- two saws are better than one) and a Supertool or Blast is a better choice. The bodies of the really big ones are just too big to hold onto very well, in my opinion.

The Huntsman is my all-time favorite SAK. I haven't run across the Plus version yet, but it sounds like they've made a couple of worthwhile additions!

I acutally was ready to buy the huntsman plus when i stumbled across the huntsman lite. its the huntsman with the addition of eyeglasses screwdriver, led light( which is fairly good) ball point pen, stick pin, and so on.....

Great! My first SAK was a Huntsman, I think they called it a camper back then, same tools as the newer Huntsman. I carried it for years, I think I got it in 1970 and I still have it today. I don't use it much anymore, I keep it for sentimental reasons:)

I have a Photon Freedom Micro on the keyring, this is why I chose to bid on a Huntsman Plus. :-)

I'm sure that light is stronger than the LED on the Huntsman Lite. <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
