Does anybody know the outside diameter of the rod itself?

I just got a new M6 scout rifle. The rifle holds some 22 ammo in the stock.

I was thinking of hot-gluing a ferrocerium rod into an empty (and possibly cut-down) empty .22 shell. Fire in the same size as a bullet. Pretty cool, if it works.

Here's another one, smaller than 1/8 inch, about 2 inches long, no handle. I plan on splitting it in half, and gluing half to a spare house key, shrink wrapping it, and attaching it to my surivival keychain. That way I either the key will make a good handle for the sparker, or if I have a problem with my house key I can pull off the sparker and use the key.

I have several of these, didn't buy 'em from CountyComm though. Mine's 0.25" O.D. (Metal part, not the handle.)

Mine look exactly like the one shown, but I got mine from G.I. Jane Military Surplus.

Can anyone explain the instructions not to stow the fire starter rod after opening the package? I have a BSA Hot Spark that seems to be oxidizing (pitting like crazy) inside my large Altoids tin PSK.

I think the "inside the tin" part is key.

I've carried a fire steel on my keychain for over a year and it looks like new (minus the ordinary scratches that come from normal use). No nail polish, no shrink tube, nothing. Just put it on my keychain and forgot about it. I use it, oh, a couple of times a month... either to start a BBQ grill or just play with. My pockets stay dry, and my dresser is dry (where the keychain spends 10 hours a day).

If you haven't already, you might try putting a silica gel pack or two in there with it. See if that makes a difference.
