I've heard of sand filters, but does anyone have the instructions for building one? It looks like it could be made from premade sewer or irrigation pipe. But details would be nice.

Those links on Sodis were quite interesting to follow. Seems so simple, just need to get the word out. Does anyone know if Sodis has been studied for elimination of Giardia and Cryptosporidium or other nasties common in the U.S. backcountry? If so, a redesign of hydration bladders so that they're more transparent might make the technique a worthwhile addition to a hiker's skillset. It looks like Sodis is more targeted to 3rd world countries and large scale disaster situations which might be dealing with different pathogens.

It works on Crypto and giardia both, though if the water is at all cloudy
you have to let it settle or use a flocking agent such as alum first.

Straining through 2 layers of tightly woven cloth (sari cloth was used in
the tests) helps remove particulates and by itself remove the particles
that cholera sticks too. Another simple water purification step.

Sari is folded 8 to 10 times in this example...
