The white LED in some Wenger SAKs is made by the same who make the Photon light, maybe that was what gave you the idea?

There is no contest between a photon and the Huntsman Lite. The photon is way brighter. I would have to guess 2 - 4 times brighter.

Paul & Alain,

Thanks for the information. Now I don't feel like I've lost all my marbles.

Chris,

The photo does show a pretty substantial difference in the light emitted by the two LEDs. I wonder if Victorinox offers a variation of the Huntsman Lite with all of the same features except for the LED. I haven't found one like that yet. I think my ideal SAK would be the Huntsman Lite with the a file substituted for the LED. We'll see if they ever approximate it.

Thanks,

John

The local WallyWorld has some small tin boxes just slightly less than twice the size of the Altoids tin. They are intended to hold a gift card for Christmas. They are about two millimeter less in height; about four millimeter less in width but slightly over twice as long--ie. place two Altoids tins together on the wide sides and the WalMart tin is about four millimeter longer than the two together. They contain a plastic liner with finger cutouts to allow the gift card to be easily removed. The lid is lightly embossed with a ribbon design. Have never seen them before and assume that they are strictly seasonal.

Plastic Sucrets boxes are a little larger than Altoids tins. Maybe they're less rugged than metal tins but they weigh less. I like plastic.

Here's a plastic box from Countycomm that also looks nice:

I was just in a, ummhhh, a sort of, ahhh, counter culture shop.
I found a black tin 4.25" x 3.125" x 1.125". They had designs on the front that looked just like the leaves from a Japanese maple, a personage who I was told is one "Bob Marley", and multi-coloured, fractally toadstools. The one I picked up had a black and white optical illusion design of muchrooms on it. My goodness, what an unusual shop.

Okay all kidding aside, pretty good tin. Just a tobacco tin, with a sticker on the front that can be removed if so desired. I'm leaving the groovy, trippy mushrooms on mine though.

In Canada, cannabis culture shops are pretty common. I'm sure that in parts of the US and other districts, a veritable scorched earth policy has been waged against head shops, so they may be near impossible to find. Some record stores might carry them, maybe try that.

While in said shop I also picked up some small glass vials and some 1" zip loc baggies. Handy for small amounts of bleach, PP, tea tree oil, and small quantities of whatever pills you feel are important in your kits.

Another tin that might work is the tin that the Brunton Helios lighter comes packaged in. It's 3.5" x 3" x 1". I was pretty leary of piezo-electrtic lighters, since most of the ones I've tried have been a complete bust, but this one has stood up to two years of hard use with no ill effects.
