Hey everyone. I'm sure some gearheads hang out in here so I have a question. I hope this doesn't violate any rules and if it does I apologise and mods I promise I won't be mad if you delete the post.
I do urban survival training once or twice a year in some of the worst areas in big cities. Basically live like you're homeless for 3-7 days. Now that covid is down I'm ready to get back to it. My pack is an ordinary school size day pack but heavier built by hi tech so size is critical. In the past I used an old cabelas bivy that packed small and weighed one pound but it's a bit claustrophobic and not good for long time sheltering in rain. It's also leakey and water from breath condenses and rains down, we've all been there. I've been researching but can't find what I want. So I thought I'd ask here. Here's my specs
Bivy tent
Must hold my 6'5 frame I ant put my pack down beside my feet so I don't need an 8 or 10 foot model
Low profile
Free standing
Dull color dark green black etc or even camo in order to not draw attention
Lightweight
A fly if possible
Maximum pack size 12x3 inches
Here's the hard part; under $50 USD

Any information or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks everyone

I would go with a smallish (6x6?) tarp to augment your present setup. If you wish to reduce weight, there are several lighter bivvy sacks, but less durable than your present setup. Throw in some twine and a few small pegs or nails and you will be light and versatile....

Goodluck!!!

Over here in Europe, would look at a surplus Dutch Army Hooped Goretex Bivi Bag. Does come in L & XL sizes. But quite sort after as they are made by Carinthia.

I moved this to Urban Preparedness given the topic.

Moving forward, please PM me if you have questions about the rules before you post.

Hey hikermor. Thanks for replying. No tarps for not are they only open but they would draw more attention. But I thank you for the suggestion. I like the Cabela's for sleep but being stuck inside it during heavy, prolonged rain is quite unpleasant. The rest of my sleep system is a klymet mattress, a cheap 1.5 pound down mummy bag and an SOL bivy for cold weather if that helps. Thanks again

Thanks for replying Ren. Lots of gear over here is too short for me as well. I've considered a bicycle tent but they either require a bike or very expensive. Thanks again

I just checked tents and bivvy sacks at REI and they all flunk your cost requirement. This is probably the closest: https://www.rei.com/product/203557/outdoor-research-alpine-ascentshell-bivy

Still doesn't meet your cost criterion. Nor does the rest of their offerings.

Actually nothing works well in storm. The best I have done is a properly oriented rock shelter. A tarp at least is versatile - pitch it high or low, ridged or lean-to, just wrap yourself within, etc. They generally provide good ventilation and a superior view of your surrounding.

I do have tents but I am a tarp fan, especially when weight is critical.

My current favorite tarp supplier is https://www.shop.backpackingadventuregear.com/ . Great prices on excellent products. No affiliation.

The listed criteria don't exist in a tent that I know of.

With this one, pack the poles separate to smoosh to 13", and find a sale.

That looks awesome hikermor. Thank you for all the research and time you've put in on this for me. I belong to a twisted online group "porta potty man cave" was one of the group challenges, and even they have come up dry with the requirements. Thanks again.
