Just purchased a hank of SOL cordage with fire starting capability and read the following on the label
"The combustion of wood, charcoal, and other fuels can expose you to chemicals including carbon monoxide and soot which are known to the state of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm"

Thank goodness Cal is looking out for us! How would we ever know otherwise??

Prop 65 warning have long ceased to have any practical value. I expect to see a warning label on my next carton of ice cream.....

Yeah, I think they meant well but it's gone beyond any useful point.

Yeah, we get it up here on items that have not and will never touch US soil. It's just a lazy legal disclaimer attached to any item that may contain anything other than certified organic lettuce. Not helpful in a practical sense.

Prop 65 is a source of much amusement over here.

Pretty sure the standard set by Prop 65 means that lettuce should carry the warning, but food producers have an exemption?

I worked for a company that made tiki torch fuel. Nothing in this fuel was known to the state of CA as a cancer-causing compound and so we didn't need the Prop 65 warning.
A person in California was using it and noticed it produced some smoke...which as Hikemor mentions IS considered a carcinogen. They reported it to the CA state prop 65 bounty hunter authorities, and we ended up being fined nearly $100,00 because the USE of our product could cause cancer. This was a novel, legal interpretation of the word "contains".

In contrast, I can recall numerous instances where building a fire was not merely nice, but crucial. I am positive I would have lost some digits in one particularly frigid situation, if not more.

The ability and means to summon fire is perhaps the most crucial survival skill, right up there with obtaining water.

My gear routinely includes matches, ferro rod, and lighter.....
and I am usually upwind from the cheery blaze.

By that logic, bread and potatoes (and anything else starchy) should carry the warning.

Because if over cook (over 120°C) them, they form acrylamide which is on the prop 65 list.

Polio (2 epidemics in south us from vanila ic a century or so ago). (vit c eliminates those problems though, if one must partake)

(noted day or two ago online that rich guy sent 'polio' shots to africa, caused over 30,000 cases of polio. Before that, they had no cases for long time.) ('they'(shot makers) renamed it some intestinal seizure or something, trying to hide the fact they caused more polio instead of preventing it)
