The above link leads to an article about a hiker in Joshua Tree National Park, dropped off at the park boundary with a canteen, found dead ten days later. You can link to another tale about a solo hiker with a broken leg, who did the right things, like carrying plenty of water, and survived after forty hours with a busted femur.

Hmmm...I don't see a link to the story of the hiking that perished. That second fellow did enough things right to save his life! Good job for sure.

It's way down at the bottom. Not much detail that I can see, except that is was perhaps almost a week before he was reported missing.

Call me technologically challenged, but what did he mean by "I had tagged my location and shared it with my son Ryan before I left"?

I assume he somehow sent a GPS coordinate of his starting location to his son. Maybe?

Thanks for the reminder. I'll admit, I've been getting a little lax in carrying water while hiking since it's so damn heavy. I carry enough to have a little left over at the end of the day hike, drinking properly...but not enough if I ended up stranded due to injury. frown

Yeah, my day hike loadout can be a bit heavy, maybe 15 lbs or a bit more! But I like to have a pair of 40oz steel water bottles filled to capacity which is probably at least six pounds of that weight. Of course, it gets lighter as the day goes on and I drink the water. Generally I'm in areas where I can resupply but I like to be prepared for anything. The last time I spent an unplanned night out I drank 1.5 bottles and used the last half bottle to make sure my fire was cold out when I got picked up.
