I very much like having headphones both for my cellphone and for my ham radio HT (or if you carry a small AM/FM receiver, for that).

Smartphones have a great deal more capability in urban areas, including live data searches, detailed maps, and using WiFi to refine GPS location data. A standalone GPS unit likely makes more sense in wilderness areas for ruggedness and battery life.
