I don't usually do this, but I will recommend a product which I have not yet handled - the 10th edition of Mountaineering:Freedom of the Hills which evidently is now available.

I do have, and have consulted many times over the years, five previous editions, including the 1960 first edition, very significant to me as I developed outdoor skills.

You say you are not a climber, and don't intend to be..The volume still has a lot of value in discussions of camping, route finding, and the like, which will be useful in many non-mountaineering situations. After all, climbing situations often closely approximate survival conditions.

Basically, FOTH deserves a place in your library....

Just a satisfied, long term user.

Great recommendation. The gold standard in such books. Much of what is online or published in magazines is very limited in scope and written by just one individual who likely is ignorant in many climbing and backpacking arenas.

This book has been vetted by many for years.

Agree, The “author” is a group...

About the Author
The Mountaineers was established in 1906 in Washington, a state with inspiring and abundant mountain peaks. In addition to the community of outdoor enthusiasts it fosters, the organization's mission is to teach outdoor skills. Over the years, hundreds of thousands have learned outdoor safety and skills from The Mountaineers, ranging from climbing to skiing to kayaking, and much more. Some of the world's most elite climbers have been and continue to be members of The Mountaineers.

IIRC, The Mountaineers is the same group that developed the 10 Essentials.
