Here’s my reconstructed DefCon Checklist, for now:

DefCon Checklist

DefCon 5: There is peace throughout the kingdom.
DefCon 4: Hostilities may commence within 72 hours.
DefCon 3: Hostilities may commence within 48 hours.
DefCon 2: Hostilities may commence within 24 hours.
DefCom 1: Hostilities may commence imminently.

DefCon 5: (Normal times)
Maintain the normal pace of everyday life.
Keep building preps and skill levels.

DefCon 4: (72hr warning)
Keep gas tanks above the 1/2 full level.
Make a plan to construct a shelter in the ground or within your home.
Inventory all preps.
Inventory all survival equipment.
Maintain normal schedules for family and self.

DefCon 3: (48 hours warning)
Top off all gas tanks, propane tanks.

Top off food and water supplies.

Postpone any immediate vacations or out of town trips. Reprioritize or reschedule unnecessary events except for medical requirements, and work requirements.

Load camper with potable water, 4 sets of clothes for each person, additional camping gear/supplies, portable lift, DD1 hygiene supplies, Intel files,

Load truck with cargo rack/chairs, genset, propane fuel, battle rattle, 2 day hiking packs,

Move into home: MOPP Gear, emergency food stores,
Prep for relocating: financial records,

DefCon 2 (24 hr warning):
Monitor Current Events
General: top off all gas tanks and cans,

Move to Camper: all emergency cash, financial records, ready hygiene supplies for DD1. All emergency meds, field FAK's, load bicycle,

Home: box all food supplies, Clean all weps, move camper stove & fuels into home, relocate air filtration to home, bring older lift inside,

DefCon 1 (Nuclear attack imminent):
Monitor Current Events

Truck: Load gas stocks,

Home: install air filtration system, have weps ready for skirmishing, construct in home shelter in Living room,

Camper: standing by in case bugging out becomes necessary

What are the priority nuclear targets in any country?

Priority 1: Strategic military installations (missile launch facilities, communications centers, command centers, 5,000 ft or longer runways, etc), Naval ports,

Priority 2: State capitals, major terrestrial transportation junctions (Rivers, canals, ports, interstates, railroads),

Priority 3: Tactical support bases, major metropolitan centers, major manufacturing centers, refineries,

Priority 4:

It is my opinion that at best we will have a forty-eight-hour notice that it will hit the fan. Before then, no indication.

If I thought we were at DefCon 3 as defined above, I’d be taking my family and bugging out for whatever part of the world I thought I could reach in time that was least likely to be targeted. I’m too close to a metropolitan area to be comfortable with the idea of bugging in for such a thing.

I'm a little confused. By "hostilities," are we talking specifically about nuclear missile strikes? Because the US has been a constant state of war for decades, so hostilities started a long time ago to my way of thinking.

If by "hostilities" we mean more specifically a fellow nuclear power, then we just bombed and killed hundreds of Russians. So we gave them DEFCON 1 by your definition. I guess I'm not understanding your system. Can you guys help me out?

Right now the official system is at DEFCON 4 -- no threats to the US, but have to monitor some world events closely.

If there is a possibility of some sort of nuclear war, I'd bug out months ahead to... to... what's a good country to run to? I'm thinking it's gotta be low-profile enough nobody would bomb it. So Western Europe and North America are out. But it's gotta be comfortable and safe enough, too. Maybe Jamaica? Should we all meet up there?

This checklist is a reflection of the US Military system in regards to generally all wartime situations but tailored specifically with nuclear war. Regional adventures have little affect on the national defcon level.

This checklist is tailored for my family’s circumstances. I offer it to all here for those who are interested may copy and modify it to fit their circumstances. defconwarningsystem.com is at DefCon level 4. Defconlevel.com says DefCon 5. I’ve seen one source (reliability unknown) that stated our military is currently at DefCon 3.

The southern hemisphere is the place to be. No nuclear targets and very little air movement across the equator (the flaw in 'On The Beach's plot).
Actually if I thought it was likely (but not certain, if it is, it's; "Hello New Zealand!") I'd simply become a part time medic, cop, or soldier and hey presto: I've got the full resources of the government protecting me.

I'd vote for NZ - great mountains and lots of beach front property. I'd get used to water circling the drain the wrong way....
