Just what the world is waiting for. If I am digging in the dark, I much prefer the light in my head, not swinging around on the shovel.

How can I attach a P rail to my head?

You could probably find a body art shop that would provide you with a Picatinny rail implant. Do you want it on top of your head or off-set left/right? wink

But then maybe that gives the enemy a point to aim at?

Archaeologists don't have enemies. Everyone loves us.

Corection: The light should be ON the head; not IN the head - that might hurt!

In times of affordable night vision devices and IR cameras might be able to aim even without a flashlight. With a M134 the enemy can aim in the general direction of the light mounted on the handle of the shovel.
As a civilian I would not worry too much about being shot at while using a shovel. In my neck of the woods the mount for the flashlight cannot be owned legally anyway.

Fairly low,at least a couple of feet below existing ground surface. But remember archies dig graves for science, so whatever they do is OK.

Practices and standards in dealing with human remains have changed radically during my time, and today, much more consideration is given to the wishes of the descendants of those we are digging up, which sometimes means the graves are not disturbed at all or are reinterred by native groups after comprehensive study.

There is a real difference between North America, where recent immigrants are studying the original inhabitants, and Great Britain, where the natives are digging up the natives. I really liked the way the remains of Richard III were handled, appropriate reburial after thorough study.

Indiana Jones has been both a curse and a blessing. People now know more or less what an archie does. That wasn't the case, pre IJ....

And the shovels we use are just plain old hardware store issue.
