Glad your trip went well.

I didn't know that in Canada you are allowed to camp anywhere. I thought it was all fire grate = camp. Huh.

It seems that would leave the Canadian shores spotted with former campfire scars.

I have a real respect for the limitations of paddling in a very strong wind. Having to move across big lakes in even moderate winds is tough enough. In those conditions I suppose its best to stay near shores. If swamped that gives you a chance to swim to shore.

I once got swamped by barge traffic waves in the Mississippi River. We were smart enough to stay near the shore until making our move across to the other side - quickly.

Canoedogs,

I wanted to ask you what you carry on your PFD. I suspect its already posted on this forum somewhere though, and its probably the subject of a different thread.

This is a few years old, but it's always in the back of my mind when I pack for a trip on the water, and I usually review it when I pack. Thanks again, WCD!

Glad you had a good trip, WCD. Smart thinking to stay on shore in a storm like that. Not worth the risk.

Nice video! I carried a Tacoma SAR unit just like the one depicted for several years, for exactly the same reason - it was a metal container in which liquids could be heated.....

I canoed the border along the entire boundary waters and some parts are very hard to navigate. One day I managed to portage my canoe 2km into the US, instead of taking a very poorly marked turn in the trail to keep along the border. Both on the water and along the often muddy and swampy paths navigation is tough.

Bruce,

Were you by chance using a GPS to help with navigation?

Like I'd said, I think with the right GPS (electronic compass with very good in-board maps) and a paper map to match the GPS in-board maps that navigation could be much much easier. Maybe the concept of a matching GPS map and paper map is more dreamware than reality though.

... and I'll admit that I'm somewhat surprised that GPS displays are still relatively small - which I think is why so many people are talking about using smartphones instead. Of course bigger displays may put them at a price point that is too high for most buyers.

+1 for GPS plus a paper map in the wild.
