For your amusement, this is the New Yorker article on uber-successful people planning for large scale, long term disasters and periods of chaos in the aftermath.

As you can imagine, the Internet promptly blew up. Critiques and criticism, and some disgust at the attitude of escaping the world's problems instead of working to solve them.

OTOH, if I had infinite resources (and nothing better to do with them), would I organize something like this? Yeah, I might. Why wouldn't I? What about you?

And a pic to go with it! (Maybe this thread should be in 'Around the Campfire?')

Lots of resources? I'd be working on a lifeboat to get off the Earth if needed. Infinite resources? I'd be building housing on Mars.

laugh laugh 'Infinite' is relative. To me, it's having a few extra mil you won't miss, to casually toss at pet projects.

It's entirely possible that the AI's will be the ultimate survivors. That makes the ultimate bug-out location a nice quiet Sputnik keeping the geosats company. No room service, but the peasants won't be rioting at your door. And sunlight is food.

Okay, I jest. In fairness, some of the people cited are trying to enhance their personal skills, ensure mobility, and organize a temporary safe haven. Not entirely unreasonable, unless it involves flying to NZ as a prerequisite to everything else.

I imagine most prudent folks put a bit aside for emergencies. This small percentage for the ultra rich allows seven figure disaster planning.

While having vast piles of money helps, it is by no means the only significant factor in survival, and, depending upon the situation, might even be relatively trivial...
