Just watched the first one. They missed an important point about chemical contamination of water sources. The advice to use tourniquets only as a last resort is wrong, the newest TCCC guidelines recommend tourniquets be used more liberally. Otherwise, not bad.

I must admit I am a bit skeptical about this kind of approach, since it implies that there is a RIGHT way and a WRONG way, which is not always the case. Real life is often more nuanced that can be expressed in a "top 25" format.

I did find #2 worthwhile, and from both my own "adventures" and from analysis of the mishaps of others, quite true. One starts out with some bad decisions - we don't need to leave that early, it won't rain today, I am sure this shortcut will - and an adventure begins. With luck and a modicum of skill, one will eventually make some correct choices and live to tell the tale.

Thanks for the update on tourniquets chaosmagnet.

I've always wondered about chemical contamination. Boiling and a milbank bag isn't going to remove say rat poison in the water Yet they are regarded as sufficient treatment.
So what is the explanation?

I'm expecting that the makers of the video don't go places where water might be contaminated with chemicals...or think they don't.

It seems to me that much of the "traditional" prescriptions for water purification are based on early 20th century polluted water, not what we encounter today. 100 years or so ago, water was polluted by natural sources (e.g. organic waste and associated pathogens), and could be purified (mostly) by boiling and/or minor filtration.

Not anymore.

Drugs, both legal and illegal, are appearing in "natural" water supplies, and various lawn care and agricultural chemicals are in good supply in the water.

I live within walking distance of the Chesapeake Bay, once a great source of a seemingly inexhaustible supply of fish, crabs and oysters. No longer.

All those legal and illegal drugs, lawn and agricultural chemicals run down hill and into the bay, and are slowly destroying it. Conservation efforts are slowing it, and in some cases improving things, but on the whole, the outlook is not good.

So, I do not trust any "natural" water to be free of adverse chemicals or drugs. It may not not kill or seriously harm you, but it is far from pure.

Sorry if this is too much of a rant, but for me the destruction of the Chesapeake Bay's productivity is a real tragedy.
