"On July 1, 2012, Davey du Plessis set off on a roughly 4,000-mile source-to-sea expedition down the Amazon. Two months and a third of the way in, he was attacked and left in the jungle to die."

Story here and video here, which has some more details and photos.

A heckuva story and plenty of things to note. One that stood out to me was that after the attack, du Plessis was separated from his boat, where the PLB was stowed. Another argument for on-body carry of critical items. Increased isolation and higher stakes call for more conservative choices about critical gear.

An amazing story and inspiring survival. I do have one question concerning the PLB - given his location, who would have responded, and how timely would their response have been? I'll assume they wouldn't have needed payment up front.

Wow.

Just a small side note. I'm guessing that a tank of gas for the boat trip was probably quite expensive for villagers living in the jungle. He probably found some generous people who were willing to give what little they had to save a stranger.

I'm glad I live in a country where the ER isn't supposed to turn away people who don't immediately have evidence they can pay.

Just now was able to finish reading it. He would never have survived except that he refused to quit. I'm very impressed.
