Les, I have exactly the same Goal Zero set (got it about 6 years ago or so). The charger comes with the special insert piece for secure AAAs charging (it holds cells tight by their sides as well).
You have probably misplaced yours. Try to reach Goal Zero for a replacement. On other hand, your springs are much more compact to carry in the panel's pocket when not in use. However they are not very safe when you need to charge on the go.
Also, I'd recommend to use the special dedicated cable for charging AA/AAAs (it was supplied with mine as well), not the USB one as you do, as with later you are loosing some notable energy due to the unnecessary 5V (USB) voltage converter duty cycle.
One more tip - when storing the panel closed in your backpack, put a piece or two of paper towels between glass faces. That will protect them from otherwise unavoidable scratching while in motion. I've figured that a bit late myself.
