A couple of minutes ago we had a nice shaker, an M 6.2 located out in the boonies about 80 miles NW of Anchorage.

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/usb000sfz7#summary

At my desk, on the 6th floor of a large office building it was quite dramatic, but no damage. When I called my wife, she said one picture fell off the wall at our house.

I look at it as a nice reminder to keep our preparations up to date, for when a big one comes that really does some damage.

Some reports of minor (so far) damage are comming in. A few smaller communites (Willow, Talkeetna, and Trapper Creek) are nearer the epicenter.

Do you know of any avalanches/icefalls triggered by this event around Denali or elsewhere?

I haven't heard of any. We don't have any significant snow yet at lower elevations, so there isn't much material to avalanche. Ice falls up on the glaciers would be a possibility, but climbing season is long since over on Denali for this year, so nobody is up there. There is the chance that someone flying over might see some snow, ice, or rock slides, but I haven't heard of any.

There were some monster slides after the 2002 M 7.9 quake on the Denali Fault. See http://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/2003/fs014-03/

This begs the question....what do you have on you to mitigate the situation if you are at the office..six stories up? I live in Florida so earthquake threat is nil...but spent 2 years in Japan where a month didn't go by where you didn't feel a "little" something. Since then I've been hyper alert when traveling. Once you have that sense, you never lose it.

Felt a 2.4 from off the coast of Cuba on the 3rd Floor of a hotel in the middle of the Keys. My initial thought was that the people in the room next door were making their own vibrations, but turned out not to be the case. The staff on the 1st Floor did not feel it at all.

Not really a threat per se, but still you can feel them in the right places.

Same as anyplace - drop, cover, and hold on. Hopefully you are not near large expanses of glass, especially mirrors on the ceiling. Protecting the head and neck is important.

Six stories up, you will have quite the E-ticket ride....

I don't recall if it was this forum or another form forum, but a get out of the building now kit was a flashlight, a whistle, and some form of full flat mask or bandanna for breathing protection.
