I have a small stockpile of butane canisters for emergency (12 canisters). I'm moving, and the movers won't take them. I just discovered UPS won't take them from individuals. (The hazmat specialist on the phone didn't tell me about this. She just made sure the material is shippable. She might have assumed that I have a hazmat account with them and I have the certification needed to ship hazmat. She told me I could ship it. So I was surprised to learn I actually couldn't when I brought the box to the UPS hub.) So how can I ship butane canisters?
That's a tough one. I assume you cannot carry them yourself. I would check to see if FedEx has the same policy. Your best bet is to figure out who in your area may have a hazmat account with UPS and see if they will help you out. Maybe a medical supply company or battery manufacturer. Be prepared to pay a premium as they surcharge this stuff heavily. I had a similar issue with warning flares a few years ago and just waited for a relative that was headed that way.

I assume that you're not driving to your new home, or you'd be putting the canisters in your car.
Thanks for the help! I also looked at shipping through USPS, but my google-fu isn't as good as yours. Kudos to HIkin Jim! The link is really useful, except that I have a bit over 3 liters. If I had time I could probably spread them over four mailings. I doubt they'd accept four boxes at once, though.
You're right that I am not driving, so I can't use the obvious solution.
Yes, eventually I gave them away upon realizing that it's much too complicated to try to ship them. However, finding someone willing to take free fuel is harder than you'd think.
