Low Land Scotland was well known for huge 19th century industrialism (Steel Works, Ship building, Linoleum, Coal, Textiles, Chemical works) with some of the largest industrial sites in the world at the time when John Muir was at his peak in forwarding the virtues of California and national environmentalism through the establishment of US Federal Government National Parks to maintain wilderness areas from exploitation by industrialists.

After almost complete de-industrialisation, now we enjoy the newly opened John Muir Way from Helensburgh (where John Muir left Scotland for a better life as a Boy) to Dunbar (Where John Muir was born) to see the sights and sounds of central Scotland, whilst spending the tourist bucks along the way. blush
