Where the hero gets a little advance warning, and is able to fly to a moderately remote lodge in the north, taking his wife and son. He survives the winter by putting an entire guest cabin inside the lodge building.

Things go well enough until a stranger arrives with the disease, and his wife and son die.

Then he wanders along through various adventures...

That's all I can remember.

Do you know this title or the author?

I don't know the book. You might try typing in plot keywords in the search engine at:

Haertig:

Thanks for that lead. I tried it out and was able to determine that I was thinking of "The Last Canadian" by William C. Heine.

Glad you found it. I hope it's a VERY good book for this price:

http://www.amazon.com/The-Last-Canadian-William-Heine/dp/0770100155

p.s. - While I can't afford the book, I might watch the movie that is loosely based on it:

Sounds like an interesting plot line (in the book that is, don't know about the "loosely based" movie plot). Hard to say if the movie would be any good though.

p.p.s. - Looks like the book was released in America under a different name, "Death Wind". Still quite expensive at Amazon though (look at that "new" price!):

Hey, how about a new fangled technology called the PUBLIC LIBRARY? Coupled with interlibrary loan, pretty much any book can be read and enjoyed.
