Okay, geeks! grin I just wanted to give you all a "heads up" about the current sale from The Teaching Company. For those that don't know about them they comb some of the top universities to find the greatest, most acclaimed professors, and the top 10% of them are approached to write and record lecture courses for The Great Courses. The topics range from philosophy to government and economics to music. Really great stuff.

They've been running some really amazing deals starting around Black Friday and running to the end of the years. Each day is a different deal. Right now and for another 12 hours or so [as of this writing] they have Latin 101: Learning a Classical Language on sale for $69 for the download or $89 for the DVDs. I just now bought it after drooling over it for awhile...couldn't pass on it at that price! Disclosure: I'm not affiliated with The Teaching Company but over the last decade or so I've purchased over 50 courses from them and all have been stellar!

Just letting you all know in case you're interested.

In my family, we are all a bunch of geeks; DW, DD and I have all enjoyed Teaching Company courses. They are well done and cover a wide variety of subjects.

Particularly useful if you're a plant nerd. A plant may have many local names, but the Latin name is universal. Edible? Poisonous? Give me the Latin name and I know what I've got.

Then there's also illegitimi non carborundum, which of course isn't really Latin, but a worthy sentiment nonetheless.

A course of Latin will also make you appreciate the 'Romani ite Domum' scene in the 'Life of Brian'... smirk

Don't take any wooden nickles, and semper ubi, sub ubi!

Three years of high school Latin, put me ahead of the curve in college sciences.

P.S. For those who don't know: "ubi" translates to "where"

homonyms, just homonyms...

I bought a photography course a couple weeks ago from them, also on an amazing sale. It was $35 for the download, 24 lectures by Joel Sartore, a guy who's worked for Natl Geo for many years. It's a wonderful course! As a kid I did yearbook photography but that's the extent of my expertise. The course really decoded the camera for me and taught me what all the parts do and what the settings are fore.
