Yea, that's never good. <img src="images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> I was talking to my old science teacher about it today and he said it's pretty nasty stuff if you don't know what your doing with it. He said if you are going to use it for water purification use it only in emergencys and not for a long period of time.

It is legal to send via the mail in powder form. I checked after I received the 4 oz I got in the mail. Offer is still open if anyone is looking for some for a kit.

Call the phone number for the Chemistry Store posted on the website and I'm sure they'll fax or email it to you ...

But, if you simply do a google search for : "potassium permanganate MSDS" .....you can find it easily online.....

Its a VERY useful chemical. But, it is a powerful oxidizer, and poisonous in solid form and super concentrated liquid solutions.

I suggest doing any mailing of it " by the numbers " as it can also be used in larger quantities to manufacture a secondary explosive. Mess around and start mailing it in violation of Postal Laws, and the FBI could come knocking at the door.

operation purple by various police forces around the world specifically tracks large amounts of potassium permanganate in shipping to make sure it is not diverted to the drugs trade. Used in the manufacture of either cocaine or heroin. sorry cant remember off hand which. this is likely to be more of a problem with the FBI than its use to manufacture home made explosives. At the amounts we are talking here they are liable to be uninterested. Shipping through the mail should be ok.

As for the advice to practice use indoors. I would suggest outdoors when there is no wind. This stuff stains incredibly well. Most things will stain dark brown not purple. The solution is purple but it usually stains brown. These stains usually will not come off. Leaving it in glass overnight will even stain the glass. Conc nitric wont even remove these stains. you have to use chromic acid. Will stain skin brown as well which wears off eventually.

Please note that potassium permanganate is not as soluble in water as it appears. Very small quantities turn the water an opaque purple. If you try to dissolve a lot of it then the crystals will still be at the bottom of the solution and will dissolve slowly. You just wont be able to see them.

If anyone wants an MSDS you can get one from Sigma-Aldrich.

Condy’s Crystals - Potassium Permanganate ( KMnO4 )

- There are several things you should know about the kit. The Condy’s Crystals are known in the US as potassium permanganate. Three of the crystals (each about the size of a grain of sugar) are mixed with a quart of water to make it potable. The small vial has enough crystals to purify 300 gallons of water. The water should be a pale pink in color. If more crystals are dissolved until the water turns red, the solution can be used as a topical antiseptic. Diluting more crystals to obtain a deep purple solution makes an external fungicide against athlete’s foot, jock itch, and ringworm. In addition, a small amount, about half the size of a dime, can be mixed with an equal amount of the crushed glucose tablet to start a fire. This can be done using the flint striker, a magnifying lens, friction (such as scraping the side of the knife blade across the mixture on a hard surface) or by adding glycerin from an advanced first aid kit or some brake fluids. BE CAREFUL WITH THIS PROCEDURE AND USE SMALL AMOUNTS OF THE MIXTURE. IGNITION WILL CREATE SPARKS UP TO A FOOT HIGH. DO NOT PRE-MIX WITH SUGAR AND STORE!
