Not too often that people get attacked by a polar bear then walk away relatively unscathed. What I found interesting, one man faced off with the bear and stuck a hammer in the bear's mouth. Not too many people would have the quick thinking and bravado to do that...

A group of hunters near Igloolik, Nunavut, had a harrowing experience when they were attacked by a polar bear that was with her cubs.

On Wednesday, five men went out to retrieve their cache of Igunaq, or aged walrus meat, when the bear attacked them.

John Arnatsiaq, 58, squared off against the bear after it went after his friend.

"All of a sudden the bear was right there. But it wasn't going for me – it was going for the other guy," said Arnatsiaq.

Arnatsiaq jumped in between the two and shoved a hammer in the bear's mouth.

For a 58 year old guy, that is one tough hombre. Very cool headed. Amazing that they got the bears instead of the bears getting them.

think about that for a second, middle aged guys up in Canada fight off a bear while getting their..."aged walrus meat"
i've seen enough Nat Geo to know they get corn flakes and Pampers at the local store but i have a feeling they will be doing fine when the stock of Spam and bottle water runs out down here.

I have heard the relationship between Inuit and polar bears described as a state of "mutual predation."

That is some serious guts. Having lived in Alaska, and herd some stories, (some true and some to outragous to not be true)

Having been within 300 Yards (that is over 900 feet) of a wild Polar bear on a snowmobile, I can tell you that is a level of fear that I prefer not to have in my life. It didn't help that the snowmobile wasn't starting.

I can't even come close to comprehending how cool and level headed this person must be.

Now that is a techno-bear to be sure! I imagine he enjoyed giving the paw to his buddies as he zoomed past them... grin
