Yes, get the training so whatever mnemonic you use makes sense, and you learn appropriate response to what the assessment reveals, etcetera.

I was looking around and found several assessment mnemonics but this ABCDEFGHI seemed the most complete and matched a couple Trauma Nurse Core Curriculum postings [fairly big download]:

See pages 78-79.

Airway
Breathing
Circulation
Disability
Expose/Examine
Farenheit
Get vital signs
Head-to-toe assessment

Of course, first and before all that:

Dude is it safe for YOU, the first-responder, to enter the scene ???

I always remember the following from my Army first aid test days:

Breathing
Bleeding
Beating
Shock
Bones
Burns
Bumps

If it's not obvious that is my mnemonic key for:

Check airway
Check traumatic blood loss
Check for heart beat
Check for shock
Check for broken/protruding bones
Check for burns
Check for head injuries

The standard EMT Rapid Trauma Assessment mnemonic is DCAP-BTLS:

Deformities
Contusions
Abrasions
Penetrations
Burns
Tenderness
Lacerations
Swelling
