I'd think that shipping ammo would offset any cost savings. But I could be wrong. Who's a good source with rational shipping, given that I could drive about 1.5 hours and spend $10 on gas to get to a pretty big gun shop around here to buy ammo. Is it really that much of a savings to buy online?

In my case, it is less about cost than availability. In my area, gun shops are small and have limited variety and amounts of ammo, and charge the going rates.

On line, I can find reasonable rates and what I want in the quantity I want. Prices plus shipping are not that out of line, and the time savings of not having to drive all over to find and buy what I want is worth the price difference, if any.

I buy what I can from Wal-Mart but they don't have what I want sometimes, and the other Gun Shop is extremely over priced. Their cost is probably why they are still around! I have purchased firearms from them but rarely ammo due to cost.

Ammunition To Go and Wideners are good places to buy it online.
Lets not forget taxes either.. here in CA nearly 10%, online 0$. Depending on the order that could replace shipping.

AmmunitionToGo, SGammo, and Sportsmansguide are online places where I've bought before and been happy with selection, speed, and shipping charges. Other places that are reportedly good, but I have not used them personally, are AIM Surplus and Wideners. All these places should be easily locatable via a Google search. I don't have the URLs handy to past into this message.

How could it be so? The cheapest .38 SPL I could find in stock are $20 per 50. Reloaded, the same 50 cost me a bit over $6. Moreover, for the same money I'm reloading my .357s too, which are even more expensive.

I'm shopping mostly for reloading supplies online (sometimes buying ammo at the shooting ranges). Primarily at Cabelas, plus at some bullets manufacturers web sites. The WallMarts nearby (CA, Bay Area) aren't selling pistol ammo anymore frown

Another good option to stock on cheap ammo would be visiting a local gun show. Never managed to attend one myself yet.

For online purchasing, here's where I go:

ammoman.com -- I buy at least 40% of my ammo from these guys, make sure to fax them a copy of your Drivers License when you give them your first order

cabelas.com -- Another 25% of my ammo comes from here, just be ready to wait for the backorder

midwayusa.com -- outstanding company, I buy a lot of stuff from them

natchezss.com -- I'll buy from these guys when it's the best price

Those are the ones I have personal experience with. The ones below are on my list but I haven't been buying ammo from them.

aimsurplus.com

ammobank.com

ammunitiontogo.com

luckygunner.com

ammoseek.com

ableammo.com

atlantaarmsandammo.com

georgia-arms.com

I have no affiliation with any of these websites other than as a customer for the first four.

Alex...the last fmj 115g 9mm bullets I purchased were $100/1000 so .10, primers $25/1000 so .025, 9mm brass (even found on range brass has a value, and I don't pick up brass on range any more) about .025, and WSF in 4# kegs with hazmat and shipping about .02...so I have about $.17/round... in a case of unknown quality..at 9.47/50 that is 18.94/100 or $.19 per loaded factory round... no tax was included... I used to cast 200g .45 (I had 2 4cavity SAECO moulds) size/lubricate as well as rifle caliber IHMSA loads, and shot a whole lot of polymer coated pistol calibers, including 12ga. It was not uncommon to shoot over 25,000 rounds a year when I started shooting practical matches, and a lot of 12 gauge for the Chevy Truck Sportsmans Team Challenge... I have a Dillon 550 with Phelps case feeder and super 1050 sitting idle, along with a MEC Grabber in 12ga. regards Les

Les; I see, that's not working for 9mm. Thanks for the numbers. And $9.45 is really a good price if you can find it.
