Probably the best target now is to shift your focus from enjoying weight loss to really enjoy the new style of life and all the benefits of your improved health and fitness.

Another option is to set some new targets in terms of physical capacity (hike, bike or run this fast/long/high/hard). Slightly out of reach from your current fitness, but not too hard or it becomes totally unrealistic. Those 10 pounds will take care of themselves.

I think that's going to work for me...the new job is a huge time investment, that's been an adjustment, and I've lost the use of my basement (and treadmill) while I deal with a prolonged painting the floor section by section process. I'd like to get out on the bike more, I agree that the challenge approach will work. Ultimately, I'd like to ride my bike around the block. This is far harder than it sounds - huge hills around here!

12 July 2010: 177 - OH NO! First "backslide" of this entire trip...

But I know why - had a few beers this weekend and didn't get as much activity as I needed. Now I have to do TWO TIMES the work...

But it's only 1 lb up, as my wife pointed out a good poop and I could be back on track smile

Easy to slip back into bad habits...not gonna happen.

A pound is as good as a plateau event. Keep looking for the physical challenges mentioned earlier. You will be successful in this. Just relax and let nature take its course. crazy

Don't play the game of missing a day and then doubling down. Facing a double dose you are more likely to skip, short change what you do, find that you enjoy the exercise less, or injure yourself. All of which undermine your long term goal of consistent and dedicated effort.

Instead of doubling down just return to the same process as if you have not missed a day. It also helps to avoid beating yourself up or feeling guilt when you miss a day. It is counter-intuitive but people who don't feel guilty over a slack day, accepting that they are human and prone to missing a day once in a while, tend to be better about resuming programs and show better long term compliance.

People who place a lot of blame on themselves when they slip tend to get into shame cycles, often sabotaging their previous progress (slamming down a half-dozen triple cheeseburgers to make themselves feel better), and have a hard time getting back into the swing of things because they see a slip as a failure. The mental framing of a day off as failure makes resuming more difficult.

Nah...I just learned that I actually can't skip my every-other-day jog on the treadmill or 3 mile run outside. That's all that happened here - added intake (all in all over the weekend I had like 3 beers, an apple muffin, some berry pie and a few other treats when I know darn well that I can have treats - in moderation. And beer - wow does beer stick with me. Fortunately, I'm a very light drinker, so it's not like it's some big hardship to cut back on beer or wine.

And, of course, I did weigh in this AM, and sure enough...175...but I'm not going to check again until next Monday.

It's all good, feeling great.
