That's why you keep a master list of things to take. If you forget it this trip, add it to the list so you don't forget it again.

And he forgot the can opener.

I like to keep rite in the rain notepads in my gear, write down stuff I wish I had.
Also, if I buy something while out because I needed it for a trip, if it CAN stay in the kit, it DOES stay in the kit.

I'm usually pretty tolerant of bugs, so I'm a bit lax about carrying bug spray. But we were going to go on a 7 mile hike in the BWCAW in MN recently, and got about half a mile in. The mosquitoes tried to pick up and carry us off to their lair. We decided to try again a different day, with bug spray.

Now I have a bottle of bug spray in the FAK in my car, plus a couple of bug repellent wipes in my man-purse.

And that is why camping teaches us about what things we can live without having.

There's genius in that. My urban friends are going to hate you. Well, they'll mostly hate me, but you too.

While car camping, I almost invariably forget -- the folding chair. Not sure why that item, just that I always do!

Previously forgotten:
Tent poles! Ended up buying new tent because the old one was too heavy and was wearing out. I always keep the poles with the tent from now on.
Socks! Ok, I forgot these once. But they were in my car. It was just went I was resorting a few things at the trail head itself that I accidentally left them in the vehicle.
Toque! Just a couple of times but never in a really cold situation. They are cheap enough to replace in any case.
35mm Camera! But it's been a long time since I've done that since I've switched to a smaller digital camera.
Reading glasses! A few years ago when I was just getting used to needing these things I neglected to take them on a couple of trips.

I've never forgotten any of the "top 10" items on the list.

Being warm and buggy down here: Spare sunglasses, light but tight weave long-sleeve shirt and long pants, hat with a brim, head net, bug juice, sunscreen.

I have cut my insect repellent use my more than half by using a head net. Using the hat, shirt and pants cuts down on sunscreen use. If your near the water sunglasses are very important. A day in glare without them means a splitting head ache and eyes that feel like they are filled with sand.

Because nothing makes a trip more miserable than stomach and digestive issues: Pink bismuth tablets, Imodium, ginger tea.

I try to carry these cures in amounts over and above what FAK/medical kit has. They can save a trip. A large supply is light, cheap and can be given away to other groups.
