Reuters article link

It seems there is a mutant form of swine flu popping up in up to 15% of the cases, depending on the country. This form goes straight for the lungs and requires more extensive medical treatment than normal flu.

More hand washing, more masks and a real strong hope for a vaccine.

School starts back next month too.

Don't they have a Swine Flu vaccine already... but not enough for a large % of the population.

Apparently the earliest any vaccine can be available is in mid November and even then it will not be available for everybody.

You could go get it now and get it out of the way and handled before there is a mad rush wink HEhe

Or stay healthy and clean.

Oh, the lung part is new. Sound familiar, to.

*sighs* I've got a plan for ten days- how long were the outbreak waves in 1918?

In an Alexandria, La hospital, I've noticed that those coming into the Emergency Room with possible Influenza symptoms are being given a mask (triage phase completed) to wear while they are waiting to be seen by the staff.

These are standard yellow (isolation) type paper face masks. Most people are wearing them properly but there are always a few who can't seem to grasp the concept.

Actually, so we don't spread FUD, there is NOT some new mutation and no more potent offshoot of H1N1 out there. There's just the one strain and what we see in the US now and in the Southern Hemisphere is basically what first emerged last spring, so it's not mutating. At least not yet. Which is great as far as vaccine development is concerned, and it is still sensitive to anti-virals.

What that article was attempting to describe is the subset of illnesses that have occurred in younger folks that are particularly serious. H1N1 is relatively mild in most folks, but unlike the run-of-the-mill flu, H1N1 has produced very serious illness in some younger folks. Older folks have mostly been spared very serious illness, which is the opposite of what usually happens with seasonal flu.

The writer seems to have been using this WHO press release as the source document for this article. This same document clearly states: "Studies have detected no signs that the virus has mutated to a more virulent or lethal form."

What, journalists exaggerating a story?! shocked

Thanks for the update, Arney. That really helps keep things in their right perspective.

I read that news article when it first came out...Friday, I think? The first part certainly had my interest until I quickly realized what was trying to be said. It's basically what we've all heard since the outbreak started in Mexico--it seems to hit some younger folks the hardest. Really, nothing that new here.

I was reading a different doc last week. It's a bit difficult to get enough details on these things. These really sick younger adults were described as generally presenting with "primary viral pneumonia" in their lower respiratory tracts, so it's really the flu virus that is attacking their lungs, and not some secondary bacterial pneumonia swooping in and taking advantage of the weakened patient.

Semper Paratus.

As many have pointed out here over the years, preparedness is a way of life, not something one kicks into high gear when TSHTF.

I'm just taking things in stride and operating as usual (the usual hand washing at work, hand sanitizer in public, etc). Nothing obsessive or paranoid...

I've already been exposed to H1N1 a couple of times (damned near fatal in one case) and didn't find out about until a week or more later (yes, we had precautions, but initiated after we've all been up-close and personal)

That's the way it usually works. I don't find out what's making my folks sick until I've been all over them for a prolonged period...

It's amazing that my annual PPD skin test (for TB) is still negative after 17 years, and I still don't have Leprosy! Go figure...

I'm still more worried about the idiots on the interstate (drunk or sober) than pandemic.

FYI, If y'all find out that I died from the flu, please feel free to post "I TOLD YOU SO!", "SAMHAIN WAS ASKING FOR IT... THE BIG DUMMY", or "I KNEW THAT BOY WAS THROWED OFF". sick

At that point, I would probably agree with you. whistle

Still looking for my pig-nose mask. I'm going to walk into work wearing it and tell folks "I don't (cough, cough, oink) feel very well (cough, oink)... cool

Here at Cabrini Hospital/Alexandria, La; I have noticed that those in the Emergency Waiting Room, who apparently have a respiratory illness, are being kept in the yellow (isolation color) surgical masks, after triage and while waiting to see a Dr.

Edited for typos.
