I'm new here and am thoroughly enjoying going through the old threads. Have already picked up a lot of good advice.

However, I'm having a problem, as I don't understand some of the abreviations. Sometimes I sit here and scratch my head. "What in the heck are they talking about?"

I'm wondering if someone could do a translation page, thread, or point us new folks to a spot that defines the most common abreviations. The info may already exist, but I just haven't found it yet.

Thanks in advance for any help
Lee

Big Thank you! I just dropped the list into a Works doc and printed it out to have it handy. Already spotted a few that now make sense of some of the things I've recently read, but didn't understand. EDC is a good example.

Thanks, again.

TDC? That's top-dead-center for people who tune their own engines.

I learned FUBAR meant Fouled Up Beyond All Recognition (Polite version, rather than Repair. It takes someone or something special to transmogrify what is merely fouled up beyond repair, to the point where it is no longer recognizable. It is a significant accomplishment. Entropy has its ongoing demands, some of us are much better than others at speeding things along.

I agree, nice list. However what is interesting is that SOS is not abreviation.

Quoted from article "What is the meaning of SOS?" (http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/060199tip6.htm):
Quote:
The Marconi Yearbook of Wireless Telegraphy and Telephony , 1918 states, "This signal [SOS] was adopted simply on account of its easy radiation and its unmistakable character. There is no special signification in the letter themselves, and it is entirely incorrect to put full stops between them [the letters]." All the popular interpretations of "SOS," "Save Our Ship," "Save Our Souls," or "Send Out Succour" are simply not valid. Stations hearing this distress call were to immediately cease handling traffic until the emergency was over and were likewise bound to answer the distress signal.
