Redwing..and all--no one thinks they will use the fishing kit but--a survival kit should contain all those things you think that you will never have to use untll push come to shove--

And it take up almost no space. Same reason I keep the Sparklite. It's my last choice, but I'm not leaving anything out because I carry it.

anyone add a sewing needle to their fishing kit? Seems like a good idea.

Always have sewing needles with me, at least three or four. Why not- they are are small enough, weigh nothing, and can't be made easily in the field.

Yes - a whole fishing/ repair kit (needles, thread, hooks, line) would take just about the same room as a pack of matches.

Everyone's needs will be different. Below is my small pocket survival kit and the other items I routinely carry when I am out in the field. I do add and subtract items based on where and when I am going, but this is the basic foundation of my kit.

This kit is carried in a simple orange pack-cloth pouch made by Survival Kit Solutions (seen below) and contains:

Along with this kit, I typically carry:

All of these items are spread throughout my pockets and/or belt. Items that I find myself using in the field a lot are duplicated (knife, flashlight, whistle and signal mirror). I also always have a small notebook and pen of some kind in my pocket and often I have a lighter with me as well.

Here is my current mini survival kit (one of several):

Contents:
Top row: opened aluminum container, Heetsheet, ACR flat whistle, 20mm button compass, double edged spearpoint knife, iodine tablets.

Middle row: Fauxton, dental floss, SAS saw, wax impregnated cotton balls, duct tape, ziplock with steristrips, fishing hooks, line, sinkers, swivels, stubby pen refill, sewing needles, thread, safety pins, awl needle.

Bottom row: Hacksaw/striker, self-relighting birthday candles, razor, diamond sharpener, fresnel lens, Mg/flint, signal mirror.

Contents are in constant flux. Mostly, this one was an exercise in packing a mini kit with a Heetsheet inside. The knife is likely to be replaced with a Mk5, and the fauxton with a Photon soon.

Comments are welcome.

Jeff,
I can't see the underside of the lid to your kit. Does it have a gasket?
