Hello,

I gotmy Sept. 2009 issue of Tactical Knives a week ago or so, and was very pleased to see Mr. Mors had Doug Ritter review his PSK and give his Opinions onsome changes.

Has anyone else read this article?

A question for Doug Ritter.

Doug, In the article you are quoted as saying The 7-inch tanto style fixed blade from Cold Steel (the Recon Tanto) has a chisel grind. In addition, that the knife in question was inadvertently lumped into the "NO finger guard" statement.

This blade however does not have a chisel grind, and does have a finger guard. Not wishing to get into a discussion on weather this type of blade is good or not for survival chores.

Did you possibly think the Recon Tanto from Cold Steel was some other model?

I am just trying to clarify some of the things in the article that stick out in my mind.

Great article!

Joseph13, I had the same "Huh?" moment when I read that "chisel grind" thing as well, but when I read it again later I saw it clearer.

The "chisel grind" thing was a reference to the style of tip on the tanto blade, and "grind" was probably the wrong word to use. If you notice, the rest of the sentence says something like "I prefer a more traditional drop point shape"

And the reference to finger guards, was not about the Recon Tanto, but in the next sentence that starts with "In regards to folders".

Most people refer to the american tanto as 'chisel tipped.'

As an aside, the japanese tanto point is as much a result of forging as any design criteria and all things being equal, tantos and drop points will both penetrate car doors.
At least that is what COLD STEEL uses to promote their product ( but voids any warranty if you duplicate it.)
Drop points are 'superior' simply because of that usefull upsweep we all love for shaving feather sticks, carving wooden canteen cups and skinning the mice we dropped with our Springfield M6 rifle.
The american tanto point is actually more efficient for drilling holes if you decide to build a set of snowshoes etc. The blade itself is marginally better ( these are my anecdotal observations) at chopping and a good billet splitter vs the SRK I owned.
