An entirely readable piece from BBC:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/7762438.stm

Hosts of triffids, a zest of Zombies, and plenty of post-apocalyptic perspective.

Enjoy!

I like the analogy between triffids and zombies. Both slow moving and not very bright.

The title "The Day of the Triffids" is a bit of a misnomer. The disaster is actually mass blindness, which would have been difficult to deal with even without feral plants.

I'm glad they mentioned "The Kraken Wakes". It's a shame they aren't making that one, as it would be more apposite if global warming is to be believed.

We eat animals because they are made of tasty meat.

Animals eat plants.

Therefore, plants are food's food.

We fear man eating plants because it is the ultimate perversion of the food chain.

That sounds like Red from "That '70s Show," surveying his "healthy" vegetarian supper:

"This isn't food. This is what food EATS!"

I recall seeing a nature show where they used time-lapse photography to show what jungle plants and vines are really doing. Which is trying to starve, strangle and poison each other. Nothing gentle or peaceful there. If plants could move like that in real time, we'd all be on the run.

I never said it was my line. :P I just couldn't remember where I got it- but it does sound like a Red-ism.

That movie "the awakening" harkened to plants attacking people via chemical response. But, I agree with Red; plants are what food eats.
